Hospital Readmissions for Decompensated Cirrhosis
نویسنده
چکیده
Scope of the Problem In all disease states, early hospital readmissions are increasingly being viewed as a public health threat. Among the Medicare population, 19% of those discharged from an acute-care hospital are readmitted within 1 month, at a cost of> $17 billion, which represents nearly 20% of the Medicare budget. Patients discharged after a hospitalization for decompensated cirrhosis have an even higher rate of early readmission, at 20% to 37% within the first month (see Fig. 1). These readmissions are associated with an increased risk of subsequent mortality, despite adjustment for other risk factors such as severity of liver disease.

Predictors of hospital re-admissions among Hispanics with hepatitis C-related cirrhosis
BACKGROUND Hospital re-admissions in decompensated cirrhosis are associated with worse patient outcomes. Hispanics have a disproportionately high prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related morbidity and mortality. The goal of this study was to evaluate the factors affecting re-admission rates among Hispanics with HCV-related cirrhosis. METHODS A total of 292 consecutive HCV-related cirrhos...
متن کاملHospital readmissions in decompensated cirrhotics: Factors pointing toward a prevention strategy
AIM To reduce readmissions and improve patient outcomes in cirrhotic patients through better understanding of readmission predictors. METHODS We performed a single-center retrospective study of patients admitted with decompensated cirrhosis from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2013 (n = 222). Primary outcomes were time to first readmission and 30-d readmission rate due to complications of cir...
متن کاملبررسی ارتباط بین MELD (Model of End Stage Liver Disease) و لیپیدهای سرم در بیماران سیروز جبران نشده (cirrhosis Decompensated)
Background & Aims: The liver plays an essential role in lipid metabolism. For reduced liver biosynthesis capacity, low levels of triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (TC) is usually observed in chronic liver diseases. We conducted this study to determine the relationship between serum lipids and MELD score level in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. Materials & Methods: A checklist was prep...
متن کاملImpact of Physician Specialty on Quality Care for Patients Hospitalized with Decompensated Cirrhosis
BACKGROUND Decompensated cirrhosis is a common precipitant for hospitalization, and there is limited information concerning factors that influence the delivery of quality care in cirrhotic inpatients. We sought to determine the relation between physician specialty and inpatient quality care for decompensated cirrhosis. DESIGN We reviewed 247 hospital admissions for decompensated cirrhosis, ma...
متن کاملRisk Factors for Frequent Readmissions and Barriers to Transplantation in Patients with Cirrhosis
BACKGROUND Hospital readmission rate is receiving increasing regulatory scrutiny. Patients with cirrhosis have high hospital readmissions rates but the relationship between frequent readmissions and barriers to transplantation remains unexplored. The goal of this study was to determine risk factors for frequent readmissions among patients with cirrhosis and identify barriers to transplantation ...
